NBC to Officially Confirm Jimmy Fallon as Late-Night Host
Announcement Expected Before Network’s May 12 Upfront Presentation

NBC is finally expected to announce Jimmy Fallon as its new late-night host between now and its May 12 upfront presentation.

NBC’s selection of Fallon was first reported by B&C last year. Fallon inked a development deal with the network in February 2007.
Fallon would fill the 12:30 a.m. late-night spot that is scheduled to be vacated by Conan O’Brien next year if NBC goes ahead with its plan for O’Brien to replace Jay Leno on The Tonight Show.

I agree with everything poster Adam Smith says (below). I have to admit, I didn't care for Jay Leno when he took over for Johnny Carson. After all, Johnny was the best. But over the years I've come to realize that Jay Leno is VERY funny. His monologue is outstanding and the rest of the show is first rate.
NBC, to dump Jay just so you won't lose Conan is a very short sighted move. When Jay winds up on another network @ 11:30...you will regret it!

NBC: Save Jay Leno!! He's a national institution. His monolog turns elections. He still pulls numbers. And the suits are dumping him? Conan's great, but too edgy for 11:35.
Jay's no Johnny, but this whole deal reeks of "Couric-ism". If I were ABC, I'd steal Jay in a heartbeat, with Jimmy Kimmel right behind him.
If broadcast TV passes, HBO should put Jay on live up against the networks.
