Philadelphia Event Marks Most-Watched Debate of 2008 Presidential Campaign

ABC News scored another debate high, giving the network the Nos. 1 and 2 spots in a record-breaking season of presidential-campaign debates.

Wednesday night's debate in Philadelphia between Democratic contenders Sens. Hillary Clinton (N.Y.) and Barack Obama (Ill.) was watched by 10.7 million viewers, the most for any debate in the 2008 cycle.
That edged out the previous high of 9.36 million for the network's Democratic debate in New Hampshire in January.
Hosted by ABC News, the National Constitution Center and WPVI-TV and moderated by Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos, the debate gave ABC its best total-viewer tune-in for the 8 p.m.-10 p.m. time period since November 2007 and its best 18-49 demo rating since February.
The first hour of Wednesday’s debate also won the 8 p.m. time period among total viewers and the demo.

There is NOTHING more powerful than an IDEA whos time has COME.
"I for one will dance in the streets when ALL the liars, cheats and cutpurses finally get run out of town".....God Bless America, I looking forward to the sounds of FREEDOM....Sound not heard since J.F.K.
(Incidentally I''''m a registered Republician, 44, White Female and quite Wealthy).........No Chips on this Womans shoulders....So what''''s ABC''''s distortion/SPIN now.......?

From a Canadian viewer from Toronto Canada:
I agree with Matt and Victor and Debbie.
The question were awful and did not deal at all with the issues we all are facing not only USA but the world.
The fact that ABC got top rating on this garbage says a lot for the commentators who asled those stupid questions.
Now I pose you both (commentators) a question:
Will ABC Network be able to help the economy or will ABC help draw troops out of IRAQ, or will ABC help the forclosure of homes in America?? The list is long, I will not embarrass you further , but just to give you an idea what your precious rating has NOTHING to do with what is happening in America or anywhere else in the World.

Totally agree with Debbie. I am registered Republican, but I am fascinated with Obama even though I disagree with some of the things he stands for. I want to hear the issues discussed, not petty sidetrack bumps that the media makes a big deal out of and they proved that by the moderators dwelling on them for at least half of the debate! The moderators should have moved on after 15 minutes. This debate really highlighted that perhaps it is the media's fault and the media's constant sensational antagonizing that causes "politics as usual".
I think the Democrats are so divided because half of them continue to play politics as usual, and the other half is simply hoping for change.

The internet really adds a dimension to trade journalism that the print versions lack -- vox pop that the industy needs to hear. Will B&C examine the debacle of the debate?
The backstory of how Charlie and George blew it must be told, because it''s an allegory on broadcast news. Was it the producers or the talent that gave ABC News this black eye? What''s the long-term effect if any? There hasn''t been a hit this big on a news division since Dan Rather was undone by some planted forgeries (or perhaps the Katie Couric soap opera).
George S. was an apparachnik of the Clintons and never should have been given the assignment. This performance may even call into question whether he can be objective on his Sunday show (although I''ve never seen him display a hint of bias until this). Gibson typically excels and has a reputation for fairness... but he showed an uncharacteristic tendency to trivialize. Perhaps the anchors should yield the stage to correspondents for these big events

Hello: Thank you for giving me the opportunity to weigh in on the debate of last night between Clinton and Obama. I thought your two questioners were awful. They pandered to the lowest expectations of the American people. Your coverage of Britney Spears and others I understand because you have discovered your base and pander to that. However, in covering a PRESIDENTIAL election you debased both candidates by not covering the real issues. God, where is Edward R. Murrow when you need him. Do you care so little about our ability to understand complex issues or is it just about the $$$$ for you people. Shame on you all.
