Australian Idol, the Aussie spinoff of Pop Idol and American Idol, is seeking contestants somewhere decidedly not down under: the United States and Europe.

For the show’s sixth season, Australian Idol will have auditions not only in Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns, but Los Angeles and London, as well.
According to the producers of the show, the idea was a natural considering the number of Australians living abroad.
In Los Angeles, the show will hold preliminary auditions at the Roosevelt Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard April 13. Those who make the first cut will perform in a filmed competition at Venice Beach, and those that remain standing will be flown to Sydney for the series’ final rounds.
“Australian Idol wants to give as many Australians as possible the chance to be part of this entertainment phenomenon,” the producers said in a statement. “Over the past five years, [the show] has created a fantastic platform for many singers who have gone on to become ‘household names’ Down Under.”
They continued, “The search is on to find Australian citizens who have left our shores to chase their showbiz dreams, as well as Aussies who have headed off on other career paths but who might be looking for a new challenge that could bring them back home to Australia for the 2008 competition.”
The show will also hold auditions in London at the Cumberland Hotel in the city’s West End.
