Verizon Communications’ FiOS TV Tops 1M Customers

Telco Moves Into 10th Place on ‘Cable’ Subscriber List, Closes In on Ninth-Place Mediacom Communications

Verizon Communications’ FiOS TV service surpassed the 1 million-customer mark, effectively making the telco the 10th-largest cable-TV provider in the country and putting it within striking distance of ninth-place Mediacom Communications, which has 1.3 million customers.

Verizon allegedly inflated subscriber numbers for its FiOS TV service.

Verizon added 736,000 FiOS TV customers in 2007, 226,000 during the fourth quarter. The company launched the service in September 2005.

In announcing the milestone, Verizon positioned itself as an alternative to traditional cable companies, which, in some places, have been unopposed in offering wired cable access.

“Some experts doubted that we could come this far, this fast,” said Virginia Ruesterholz, president of Verizon Telecom, in a statement. “We launched FiOS TV just 28 months ago in one Texas market. While we’re delighted to pass the 1 million milestone, we know that the real winners are our customers, who now have a genuine choice for their cable-television service.”
