WGA STRIKE UPDATE: WGA West Cancels Awards Ceremony

With Golden Globe Awards Already Dead, Canceled WGA Awards Could Be Oscar Precursor

By B&C Staff -- Broadcasting & Cable, 1/10/2008 12:41:00 PM MT

Days after the Golden Globe Awards were canceled amid the ongoing writers' strike, the Writers Guild of America West announced Thursday that it will not go forward with its own WGA Awards show. The guild will instead announce the winners Feb. 9, when the show was originally scheduled.

WGA Awards

In a terse statement, WGA spokesman Gregg Mitchell said: “The Writers Guild of America, West will be announcing the 2008 Writers Guild Awards winners Feb. 9. There will be no Writers Guild of America West show until the strike is over.”

The WGA initially said it would go on with the show after granting a waiver to the Screen Actors Guild to use writers on its Jan. 27 SAG Awards show. But with the Globes dead, the latest canceled awards ceremony only intensified speculation about the fate of the Academy Awards, set for Feb. 24.

A spokeswoman for WGA East followed with a statement saying that the East Coast branch “has not yet made a decision on the New York-based WGAE show. We are exploring our options and we will let you know when we have made a decision.”
