Former ABC News staffer John Alexander, 26, died suddenly Wednesday while on assignment in China with Ted Koppel's Discovery Channel program,Koppel on Discovery.
"John was a vibrant, intelligent, energetic young man just short of his 27th birthday. He had accomplished much but had far more yet to contribute to television journalism," ABC News president David Westin wrote in an e-mail to staffers. "We are all poorer for his loss."
Alexander left ABC News, along with Koppel's longtime producer, Tom Bettag, for an associate-producer post at Discovery working with Koppel and Bettag.

Surely we will miss some insightful, intriguing and wonderful programming because of this man's death but what an extraordinary life he had. His dreams came true and he was in the thick of it when he died. We have been cheated; maybe John was not.
I am sure it will be said that "he had it all," and maybe he did but if he died with an awareness of how nearly he had "done it all," perhaps his eternity will be in that state of peace.

I met John when he came to Discovery with Ted Koppel. We shared
some common interests so I was drawn into his orbit. He was such a
vibrant, intelligent young man, whose drive and passion for life
surpassed his all too few years on this planet.
It was a shocking event to learn of and my heart and thoughts go out
to his family, friends and collegues. He was one of the good ones. He
was a person you would want your sister to come home with. John's
intellect matched his presence.
I feel lucky to have known John. I only wish I could tell him that.
