STRIKE COVERAGE: Ellen Back to Work after Standing with Striking Writers
Talk-Show Host Addresses Audience About WGA Strike Instead of Monologue

Talk-show host
was back at work Tuesday after sitting out Monday in support of her
. Instead of her standard monologue, DeGeneres addressed the audience during Tuesday’s taping with the following:

“I’ve got to say this is a strange show for me to do. This is weird. Weird. It’s a weird show. Channeling Johnny Carson all of a sudden. (Imitates Carson) ‘Very Weird. Weird. Weird.’
"Here’s what the deal is. It’s sweeps, which is a very important time in television. That’s when you do your best shows, your funniest material, you pull out all the stops and you’re doing everything you can because you want everybody watching. Now at this moment, we’re in the middle of this strike. There’s a writer’s strike going on, and here in Los Angeles, it’s a huge story. I don’t know where you live, but it’s a huge story in Los Angeles.
"I want to say I love my writers. I love them. In honor of them today, I’m not going to do a monologue. I support them and hope that they get everything they’re asking for. And I hope it works out soon.
"In the meantime, people have traveled across the country. They’ve made plans. They’re here. I want to do everything I can to make your trip enjoyable and give you a show. Otherwise you’d just be wandering around and circling Bob Hope Drive.”
DeGeneres was the only daytime host who didn’t cross the picket line, but only her show and CBS’ Dr. Phil employ writers that are under guild contracts. Dr. Phil has not been affected by the strike. DeGeneres and Warner Bros. will have to make up one original episode to TV stations after DeGeneres chose not to report to work on Monday.

If Ellen DeGeneres is in direct competition with Oprah, Rachael Ray, Dr. Phil, Live with Regis and Kelly, The View, Martha, Tyra, Jerry, Maury and Montel, all of which are in first run daytime syndication and are continuing in production -- and Ellen's show along with Dr. Phil's are the only syndicated shows that employ writers that are under guild contracts...I wonder why the WGA members are not picketing outside of Oprah, Rachael Ray, Live with Regis and Kelly, The View, Martha, Tyra, Jerry, Maury and Montel - rather than giving Ellen a hard time? These other shows may pay their writers less, which undermines each production company that competes directly with them...why are not these showrunners and writers that are non-union not being made aware for the duration of a week the overall impact they have? Why are they not being intived into the guild? For free? Today? Why is the focus on a woman whose show pays guilded writers, rather than those shows who do not? Are not the WGA members encouraging her to put her show in jeopardy which could indeed cost a number of WGA writers their future jobs, while those other shows will definitely continue with the non-union writers?

Ellen, you smell. You think anybody will buy into your excuses for crossing the picket line? Especially since you're a card-carrying member of the WGA? Well, nobody can accuse you of loyalty.
I was an ardent fan of Ellen’s. But I’ve grown to hate her talk show. All she does is panders and fawns over a lot of these egotistical celebrities because she wants so badly to be part of the A-List crowd.
I do not think she is good at interviewing people, unless you call kissing butt an interviewing skill. Rosie O’Donnell was a crackerjack at interviewing her guests on her show–she was never boring. Her show always crackled.
Ellen tries too hard to be “nice†and is so bland when she’s not gushing over her latest celebrity guest that I zone out. She is no longer of the common people, and strikes me as somebody who only wants to associate with other celebrities to further her own celebrity-ism. That’s why she kisses butt so much. You don’t win Emmys by being a maverick–you win them by being politically in with those who vote. And Ellen does not want to lose those Emmys with the powers-that-be who obviously do not support the Writers' Strike.
And she uses dog adoption as a publicity stunt. Ellen, STOP ADOPTING DOGS! First Lucy, now Iggy. I do not understand why you could not come up with a workable solution for either dog, given how big your property is. I think the dogs were TOO MUCH WORK and TROUBLE for her, so she decided to get rid of them instead of figuring out a workable solution with the cats. (Unless she is BLAMING the Cats instead of admitting SHE or her latest Girlfriend didn’t like the animals). And thanks to her crocodile tears on her TV show, the animal adoption agency has received death threats and harassing phone calls. Nice going, Ellen.
So she treats her writers like garbage according to that ex-writer on his blog? I am not surprised. I am a writer myself, and really dislike people like Ellen who abuse their staff and blame them FOR HER FAILURE. Don’t get laughs? Maybe it’s the way you delivery the line, Ellen, and NOT the writer. So she crosses the picket line instead of supporting the WGA? Why is everybody so surprised? She doesn’t want to miss being on her show in her zeal to keep clawing up the Hollywood ladder. A person like her who dumps dogs at the drop of a hat and treats writers like crap doesn’t give a whit. She only cares about herself.

I just emailed the Ellen show to let them know I will not watch any television program hosted by a scab.

ELLEN SUPPORTS HER WRITERS!!
She has no choice but to show up for work, she got in trouble for not showing up Monday. SHE HAS TO WORK! She also has to think about the other 135 staff members that rely on her to show up for work so they can receive a pay cheque. She loves her writers and supports them 100%. Just because other stars are out there giving their writers food, and protesting with them doesn't mean crap. Why not blast them too?? They are still going to work, and they are continuting to shoot their shows. They are going out between shots. Jimmy Kimmell is still shooting his show as well! Without his writers. So before you come on here and blast Ellen because she is still going to work, look at all the other stars that are going to work still and blast them too. The media is out trying to cause more trouble. Tons of writers that are striking understand that they have to go to work, and they dont hold a grudge against them. They just want their money and what they should deserve to get. Ellen writes her own monologues..and sice she HAS to go to work she wants her writers to know she supports them, so she cuts it. If you're going to blast Ellen than blast everyone else that is still going to work!
