History Channel Renews Two Series

The Universe , Cities of the Underworld Returning for Second Seasons

By Alex Weprin -- Broadcasting & Cable, 10/3/2007 8:38:00 AM

The History Channel picked up second-season orders of The Universe and Cities of the Underworld.

Both of the shows received second-season pickups of 13 episodes.

“It is imperative that we stay current and fresh in our approach to programming,” History executive vice president and general manager Nancy Dubuc said in a statement. “Our strategy is to continue building our schedule around appointment television like Cities of the Underworld and The Universe.”

In addition to the new-season orders, the network will launch a broadband companion program to The Universe and will bring back Naked Underground, a broadband companion to Cities of the Underworld.

Backyard Astronomer, the companion program to The Universe, will tackle the basics of astronomy. According to the network, the goal is to have a “user-friendly way to engage viewers and Web users in learning about the stars and the moon.”

Naked Underground expands on parent program Cities of the Underworld by exploring the cities featured in the show in greater detail, including back stories and local urban myths.

“Today, success is measured across multiple platforms, and we are always looking for new ways to create natural extensions for our fans to immerse themselves in our content everywhere,” Dubuc said.

The second season of The Universe will premiere on the network in the fourth quarter of 2007, and the second season of Cities of the Underworld will bow in the first quarter of 2008.
