Former Fresno TV Exec Dead
Joseph C. Drilling, former television executive who was a top architect of Retlaw Broadcasting owned by the Walt Disney family, died Sept 1. He was 85. Drilling spent much of his career in Fresno, Calif., where he began at KARM-AM. Later, as a production manager, he helped put KMJ-TV (now KSEE) on the air in Fresno. In 1953, he also was hired to put Fresno's KJEO-TV (now KGPE) on the air. In 1968, when Drilling, then in Los Angeles, began Retlaw, its first acquisition was KJEO, allowing Drilling to return to the city he loved.
Drilling served stints as ABC Affiliate Board Chairman and chairman of the California Broadcasters Association (which named him broadcaster of the year in 1991), and as a member of the National Association of Broadcasters board.
