TV To Blame for Seinfeld Star's Racist Rant?
By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 11/22/2006 11:25:00 AM
The NAACP wants to talk to former Seinfeld star Michael Richards, and suggests that TV may be partly to blame for his racist rant at an L.A. comedy club this week.
The Hollywood chapter says it has put in calls to the comedian's representatives and is waiting to hear back.
Richards used the "n" word and a reference to lynching in an outburst prompted by some hecklers.
Richards apologized, but the NAACP wasn't convinced by his assertion that he was not a racist.
"His declaration that he is not a racist is indicative of the type of denial that too often accompany racist rhetoric," the group said in a statement Friday. "Too many Americans are living in what has been called the 51st State--the state of denial. Before Mr. Richards and lamentably millions of other Americans can confront and correct the cancerous disease of racism that is hidden in their hearts, they must first acknowledge that it exists and that they have it.”
It also pointed the finger at the media: "The NAACP believes that racism is taught. Media, particularly television, has proven to be a powerful teacher," the group said. "The NAACP recognizes that when it comes to forming ideas and establishing norms, nothing is more influential than the images and concepts delivered into our lives on a daily basis by radio, television, film and the Internet."

He ISN'T going to work in Hollywood again. He's done, finished, and rightfully so. I don't get where you have the idea that he's being treated any differently as a white man than a black man would be treated in regards to this particular situation. Is anyone offering him roles? People aren't letting it go. He's not a big enough star to be able to work in Hollywood after something like this. People see him as a joke who has proven himself to be not only racist, but stupid, too. He simply won't work in Hollywood again.
What's more appalling is how people are forgiving and forgetting about Mel Gibson's tirade already. He doesn't even seem remorseful about it anymore, and it's like people don't care. I guess he'll always have his Christian right-wing buddies and in this country, that's all you need.

Richards is a hack actor who has had one very good role in his career. He is not a person of any political importance, just a person unable to control his mouth under pressure. So what. There are bigger problems in the world for the Hollywood NAACP, Jesse Jackson and everyone else complaining about this incident to concentrate on.

I believe Mr. Ricards or shall I say Mr. ignorant, evil devil animal. I am disgusted and further more outraged with the way this matter is being handled. If he were a black man he would never work in Hollywood again and would have been shunned from all America, but because this inhuman beast is of white orientation he is being passified as though we people of normalcy care if he's going through personal problems. This a perfect example of how this country has a lot of growing to do in terms of "created equal," is concerned.
