MSNBC Management Shifts Continue
By Allison Romano -- Broadcasting & Cable, 6/12/2006 8:41:00 AM
MSNBC's new management team includes one NBC News veteran and, in a surprise move, one of its best-known talents moving into a management role.
As expected, NBC News senior VP Phil Griffin, also a vet of MSNBC, will be the executive in charge of the network, NBC said Monday.
His top deputy will be Dan Abrams, host of MSNBC legal show The Abrams Report and NBC News' chief legal reporter. Abrams, who has been on-air at MSNBC for nine years, will now be general manager and quit his network show. He will, however, remain NBC's legal ace, providing commentary for NBC News shows, including Today, and for MSNBC.
Along with his new MSNBC duties, Griffin will continue to oversee NBC's Today, a position he has held since April 2005. Previously, he was MSNBC's VP of prime time programming and also has been an executive producer of Hardball with Chris Matthews.
The new executives replace Rick Kaplan, who exited last week after two and a half year tenure that saw MSNBC make some gains in demographic ratings, but failed to move up in the overall ratings race against CNN and Fox News.
"MSNBC is a key asset in the NBC News portfolio and this management restructuring will enable it to build on the momentum it already has," NBC News President Steve Capus said in a statement. "With his nine years of experience at MSNBC, Dan will bring an insider's perspective to the job. Dan is passionate about MSNBC and has the experience and strategic vision to lead it into its second decade. We are also extremely fortunate that Phil Griffin will re-assume a leadership position overseeing MSNBC," Capus continued. "Phil is an immensely talented executive and producer whose insight and drive are welcome as we focus on the future of MSNBC."
Afer ten years of joint ownership with NBC and Microsoft, MSNBC is now solely an NBC operation. The network bought majority interest in the network last year and plans to buy out Microsoft completely. Capus has ultimate oversight for the network and has said he wants to better integrate the operation with the NBC News mothership.

Dear MSNBC Suits,
I love the addition of Ed at 6pm. Now I'd like to see you give Joe Madison, of XM radio ch. 169, a look in the 10pm slot. Mr. Madison would fit in nicely as another strong progressive voice to bat clean-up right after Rachel.
If this were to happen, I'd get rid of my TV remote.
Thanks

Dear Mr. Griffin and Mr. Abrams, it seems your venture into "News" has gone astray. I just read bios of some of your key people, and I am astonished at how FEW have college degrees in Journalism. No wonder you and your Cable "News" programs are CONSTANTLY being duped by faux stories you report as "TRUE" news. Olberman, a sports reporter being a political reporter, are you kidding me ? Then you hire an openly gay women to be a leader, and she says she "HAS NO AGENDA" on political information that is now more than ever, something that needs to be NEUTRAL. Are you kidding me again ?? Scarborough, yeah he has a J.D. which means he''''s good on law !! Yeah I understand he was a Republican House of Representative member from Florida, but law is not practiced in Journalism gentlemen !!! Oh yeah, Schuster, the guy who "BROKE" the story about Palin and Africa, are you kidding me, again ? He has an M.A. in International Affairs - - where''''s his Journalism degree ??? Imagine, my Fire Chief, not havng an Associates degree in Fire Science, as a building block, years of firefighting experience, then supplemented with a Bachelor''''s degree in Public Administration. Wait, I think that''''s exactly what he has, an AAS in Fire Science, a BA in Public Administration, and 25 years in firefighting, uhmmmm
I guess the message for you two is this - - MAKE UP YOUR DAMN MIND !!
Are you in the entertainment business where pretty faces and the ability to improvise are hallmarks of quality, or in the Journalism business, where telling facts based on exemplary research, and sharing findings in an absolutely unbiased way and letting the listener decide are hallmarks of great journalism ??
Regardless, it''''s time you begin removing several of your "Celebrity" personalities and replace with QUALIFIED - UNBIASED journalists, then right after that, you (Mr. Griffin) and Mr. Abrams resign, without taking the multi-million dollar paychecks for FAILURE that so many other "managers / CEO''''s" have taken.
With great DISSATISFACTION of your overall product

NBC TV Nightly News is middle of the road doing a good job and reporting facts what’s up with MSNBC News being to the LEFT supporting Democratic candidates and issues so openly and being so bias? It shows and I am reporting back to help you do a self-examination. Now is the time you are not immune.

When will the powers to be get rid of that pious, self absorbed pontificator and ridiculous character Keith "the Nazi" Olbermann? He brings nothing to MSNBC but his one sided rantings for the liberal left. It's one thing to be an American broadcaster and newsman with left leaning, left thinking tendencies. It's quite another to be a traitorous big mouthed dunce who attacks our commander in chief during a time of war, even if you do not agree with the reasons for going to war. Olbermann is a complete and dangerous idiot.

Keith Olberman continues to be the poorist excuse for TV show host. He thinks he is funny. He is nothing but a bully. He thinks he is smart. Nothing is furthest from the truth. He should not be broadcasting football. He is worse than Brent Mossbarger. I have to turn him off and if you don't take him off the air I will stop watching all of MSNBC even though I like Hardball and Joe Scarborough. Keith Olberman ranks at the bottom of the list behind Forest Sawyer (late of ABC) and Al Franken (late of Air America). I implore the management to take charge and do something. While you are at it get rid of Dan Abrams too.
